Welcome to the Ordnance Survey
Golf Club's 2011 review.
2011 again was an excellent year for the Ordnance Survey club. Most of
the venues enjoyed good support as we played a mixture of courses. Some
new while others have not been played for some time. This year the club
was led by the likeable, friendly and pleasant captain Kris Drudge.
It's frightening how the year flies by. Although the summer was not great,
the outings bar one generally enjoyed reasonable weather.
Our early season venue began in April with member venturing north to Marlborough
golf course. This was lasted played in the year 2000 when Gordon Brading
was captain. Kris Drudge drove in as is the custom and this time the ball
was collected by Robbie Rothwell. On a very pleasant day Bob Bailey carded
a Gross 73 to win the London Road shield for a record 9th time. Second
was Brian Drayton with Phil Blakeman third. Bob Bailey also scored a net
69 to win the Chessington Cup. This is the 3rd time Bob has done this
particular double. 2nd was Brian Drayton with Kris Drudge third. The afternoon
stableford competition was won by Alan Bush with an excellent 40 points.
At the beginning of May the Survey again visited Leckford. This was the
first of the 18 hole outings for 2011. Again this year the competition
played was a scramble to decide the outcome of the Captains Scramble shield.
The competition was played with a difference as it was open to non members
and guests. This provided a very good turnout of 31 competitors. This
year the team of Brading, Jones, and Blakeman carried off the prize.
The next event on the calendar at the end of May was the club championship
held at the Southampton city golf course. This year the club championship
was billed as the shoot at the ok carrol between the baileys, Bob and
Darren. Alas it was Bob who prevailed carding a gross 146 to capture his
record 13th Club Championship with Geoff Dear and Chris Dunn 2nd &
3rd respectively. The T M Baker was won by Lee Gladwin-Stride who scored
a net 136 with Chris Dunn 2nd and Kris Drudge 3rd.
In June the OS tour travelled west to Bournemouth where we played at a
very wet Meyrick Park for the Topo Trophy. Mike Purvis was the victor
at this 2nd 18 hole venue of the year with a net 67 Steve Hunt was second
with Alan Bush third.
The early July venue for 2011 was a trip up the M3 where we played a new
course on the itenary. This was Dummer Golf Course the 3rd 18 hole outing
and the venue of the afternoon decanter. The winner on this occasion was
Don Snowsill with an excellent 42 points with Don Davies 2nd and Malcolm
Fletcher 3rd. In late July the tour moved to a pleasant golf course of
Rushmore in Wiltshire where the Roger Martin Trophy was contested. Last
visited in 2004. This was the 4th 18 hole outing of the year. On this
occasion Steve Hunt was the winner with a net 71, with Kevin Jones 2nd
and Kris Drudge 3rd.
The August outing and the highlight of the year as far as the captain
is concerned was Captains Day held this year at Canford Magna near Bournemouth.
This was a complete new venue with the 28 competitors playing the river
side course in the morning and the parkland course in the afternoon. This
year's winner of the Captains Prize was Geoff Dear with a magnificent
net 68 and 42 points closely followed by Don Snowsill in 2nd place and
Doug Johnson 3rd.
The last event of the year was the Autumn Flag and for those over 55 the
Veterans cup. This is held every year in the autumn at Dibden Golf Club.
Again this year the winner went up the 19th hole with Darren Bailey finishing
26 ft from the hole. Kris Drudge came second finishing in the 18th hole
with Trevor Coupland coming 3rd. Trevor also won the Veteran's Cup with
a net 70 with Phil Blakeman & Mike Purvis 2nd and 3rd respectively.
One discovery that was made at Dibden was that Jeff Easter is still live
and kicking. After disappearing for several years off the golfing map
Jeff (lord lucan) Easter hopes to play more in the future.
The Match Play events ran throughout the year as usual. Kris Drudge finally
broke the domination of Phil Blakeman in the Bentley Cup by beating Chris
Green in the final to win his first match play title. The Match Play Cup
was won by In the Bob Sevage trophy Geoff Dear and Tony Gray defeated
Kris Drudge and Darren Bailey and in the Sumner cup Don Hobbs & Robbie
Rothwell beat Chris Green & Don Snowsill.
The social matches this year were organised by the Vice Captain Darren
Bailey. The season opener was the match against Southampton Solicitors
where the OS was victorious 2 ½ - 1 ½. In June Darren Bailey's
team depleted by a lack of players lost 3-2 to the AA. The Ordnance Survey
faired better against Robbie Rothwells G4S side winning 4-1. The season
continued with the match against ESRI at Hoebridge where the OSO winning
margin this year was 33 points.
Unfortunately the two matches against the Southampton municipal in the
Survey Cup and the Bowdrey Cup was cancelled this year.
In other social matches this year Chris Dunn won the 9th Past Captains
Cup at Leckford, victory by the in house / associates team over the retired
/ associates to win the Diamond Jubilee Cup. 4-3. the Vice Captain hammered
the Captain 4 ½ - ½ in the end of season match.
This year's OS Triangular match was held at the Balmoral GC near Belfast.
On this occasion the Ordnance Survey came third in the competition.
Others winner to mention is 2011. Chris Dunn regained the order of Merit
with a total of 480 second was Lee Gladwin -Stride with 412 with Capt
Drudge with 352. Kevin Jones won the Chairman's Cleek with a 213 for the
best 3 scores from the 4 outings. Chris Dunn also completed a double by
winning the 72 hole competition and the Eclectic.
Looking forward to 2012 our new Captain is Darren Bailey with Phil Wyndham
as his Vice Captain. We hope you will join was us to give Darren our support
and wish him a successful year as Captain. Let hope all his outings are
blessed with fine weather.
